Behind the sound
Seasonal broadcasting and political control
The Bundesarchiv records a Christmas radio address by Chancellor Wilhelm Marx in 1923. Seasonal broadcasting therefore predates the Nazi regime. This earlier history places the collection’s Christmas label in a broader broadcasting tradition without suggesting that any of its six entries is a speech or a radio recording.
By 1936, German broadcasting operated within the Nazi propaganda system established after 1933. Radio helped cultivate loyalty to the regime while promoting racial exclusion. This political setting matters for material attributed to that period, although the year in the collection title remains an unverified label.
Entertainment music occupied a substantial place in Nazi broadcasting, helping to retain audiences within a controlled medium. Music could appear in a propagandistic setting without originating as a Nazi work. The six entries remain unidentified, including whether they contain music, speech or a mixture.
Presented for critical historical study of propaganda, war and persecution. Nazi and fascist ideology, racial exclusion and violence are not endorsed.
